Rather ironically, Yamatogaku is a style that originally modernized traditional music, that itself has become a tradition. It was an attempt to update the music within the tradition, beginning with Kishichiro Okura (1882-1963) and until recently headed by shamisen player Hisamitsu Yamato (1938 - 2013). Rather than encompassing western instrumentation, instead the singing has a western harmony applied on certain sections.
