The Tohoku Youth Orchestra is an orchestra ranging from elementary school students to university students from Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. The project was started by Ryuichi Sakamoto following the Great East Japan Earthquake. It became one of Sakamoto's last and lasting legacies.
The latest album by the Tohoku Youth Orchestra, connecting Ryuichi Sakamoto's music to the future. This work captures the Tohoku Youth Orchestra's regular concert held in 2025, which began immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake in response to a call from director Ryuichi Sakamoto, and it is a special album in which a wide variety of pieces, from Ryuichi Sakamoto's signature works to his later works, are recorded in a fresh ensemble. It allows listeners to trace Ryuichi Sakamoto's multifaceted creative world, including the Japan premiere of "Piece for Ilia", born from a collaboration with the young Ukrainian violinist Illia Bondarenko, as well as famous film music pieces such as "The Last Emperor", "Little Buddha", and "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", and YMO-era works such as "Castalia" and "Tong Poo".
