Winner of the 19th Annual Prize of the Japan Traditional Cultures Foundation. Yoshikazu Sanabe began studying Ryukyuan classical dance under Toshiko Matayoshi at the age of six. He is now a master (shihan) in the Seibukai school of Ryukyuan dance and holds the rank of successor in the Society for the Preservation of Traditional Kumiodori and the Society for the Preservation of Ryukyuan Dance. He has gained a reputation for his outstanding abilities in Ryukuan classical dance and theatre and the genres of popular zo-odoru and contemporary dance, and is probably the leading young exponent of Ryukuan dance today.
