Koes Plus were one of Indonesia's biggest acts during the 70s. From East Java, they started off playing Beatles inspired rock 'n' roll, but were arrested for playing 'western' music as it was banned by President Sukarno in 1965. Pop Melayu was one of the 'native' styles that benefiited, sung in the Malay language, the Melayu being one of the ethnic groups of Sumatra. Pop Melayu was one of the forerunners of dangdut. This is an album of the pop Melayu style, a fascinating listen to the music of a nation at a significant moment in its history.
