In the late Edo period, some popular songs which had developed outside of kabuki, called 'hauta' were worked into kabuki dances. Karigane is one such piece with some great music written by Mokuami. Yudachi is a dance about a lower class man who falls in love with an aristocratic women on the bank of the Fukagawa in Edo.
