The Showa era's king of comedy, from the stages of Asakusa and Yurakucho's entertainment district, to the early days of Japanese cinema, and a singer of comic songs, he became a nationwide star. He also introduced foreign songs and rhythms into Japan through his singing style and lyrics, performed jazzified versions of kabuki and rokyoku, sung politicized war songs, about the life of workers, and theme tunes for stage and screen.
