Peking Opera or Jingju (Capital Opera) is one of about 360 different kinds of Chinese opera. Originally developed in the second half of the 19th century, Peking Opera was very popular during the late Qing dynasty, suffering during the Cultural Revolution, afterwhich it regained popularity but after the opening of China under Deng Xiaoping had to compete with the influx of Western culture.
