Kabuki Next is a relatively new genre of kabuki. The first kabuki Next drama is Aterui, written by Nakajima Kazuki for Ichikawa Somegoro. It was staged for the first time in 2002. This is the cinema version which went on release in Japan originally in June 2016. It was shot at Shinbashi Enbujo in July 2015. The cast includes headliners Nakamura Kankuro and Nakamura Shichinosuke with NTSC, Region Code 2. 185 minutes. Kazuki Nakajima, Somegoro Ichikawa, Tsurumatsu Nakamura, Kamezo Kataoka. The film is directed by Inoue Hidenori who together with Nakajima Kazuki is of the theatre group Gekidan Shinkansen, which they started in 1985. The Nakamura family has always had an interested in developing kabuki. They blend old and new creating something very exciting to watch.
The story of Aterui is set in ancient Japan. The Yamato Kingdom is aiming to unite all of Japan, and has succeeded in subjugating the Kumaso of southern Japan., and turn their attention to the north and the Emishi people. Two men find themselves facing each in battle. Tamuramaro and Aterui. Aterui is Emishi but to protect woman he defeats the Emishi god Arahabaki, who casts a spell on Aterui. The two men are in equals in strength and part with the premonition they will meet again.
