Documentary on Ryuichi Sakamoto, directed by Stephen Nomura Schible. In 2014 Ryuichi Sakamoto was diagnosed with throat cancer. His reaction was to make more music. Not long after his treatment, Sakamoto started making the album async, released in 2017. The composition process of async provides the theme of this documentary. His enthusiasm for experimentation using for example natural sounds is illuminating. He explains he draws inspiration from Andrei Tarkovski's use of sounds and music in the film Solaris. The documentary begins in 2012, a year after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Sakamoto is a long time critic of Japan's nuclear policy, as his concern for the environment. Archive footage includes Sakamoto with Yellow Magic Orchestra and conducting the score to his Oscar winning soundtrack, The Last Emperor.
