Product Description

Xiang was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China in 1984. Since 2017, he has been forging an experimental music scene in Chengdu. Using field recordings, violin, noise, and the body, he performs site-specific performances, attuned to the subtle changes in sound and space. In addition to solo improvisation and composition, he also collaborates with other musicians and artists on numerous collaborative projects. He is actively involved in event planning and hosting, starting with the Vital Sounding Festival in Chengdu in 2017 and the Daybreak Concert Series, which has been running irregularly in Chengdu, Beijing, and Berlin since 2023.This album features a roughly hour-long duo performance with Xiang at Sichuan University in March 2025, when Yoshihide Otomo visited Chengdu on a China tour. Both Xiang and Otomo prepared various non-instrumental objects and created a wide variety of sounds by striking and scraping them. Xiang also plays violin, and Otomo plays a broken guitar, occasionally accompanied by the sound of strings scraping. However, throughout the album, sounds like flapping, banging, and rattling are heard. Occasional voices, whistling, and mouth-smacking are also audible. An album dominated by such sounds is highly unusual for Otomo's work. However, the distribution and composition of the noises the duo create, and the way they permeate the venue, are exquisite, making this a valuable record.
