Isao Tomita passed away on May 5th 2016, aged 84. At the time of his death, Tomita was working on a musical, Doctor Coppelius, dedicated to his friend Hideo Itokawa. The performance was scheduled to be on what would have been his 85th birthday on November 11th and 12th at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo. Before his death, Tomita had said that he wished Doctor Coppelius would be finished after his death, so in line with his wishes, as well as his family, the concert went ahead titled 'The Memorial Concert for Isao Tomita- Isao Tomita x Hatsune Miku 'Dr. Coppelius'. Hideo Itokawa was a pioneer of Japan's aerospace industry. Dr. Coppelius is about a young scientist who dreams of flying into space, and a mysterious girl from another world. It is called a 'Space Ballet' in which the characters transcend space and time. Although most of the music had been completed at the time of Tomita's death, it still needed arranging. This was done by Hikaru Kotobuki. Ballet dancer Mugen Kazama performs with the virtual character, Hatsune Miku. It will be staged again in April 2017.

Tracks include Ascending Life Form, Into The Outer Space, Landing on The Asteroid 25143 Itokawa, Song of Grief

End of The Time, Rise of The Planet 9

Price: 39.99

Tomita's most recent work performed for the first time in November 2012, filmed on September 15th 2013 at Tokyo, Bunkamura, Orchard Hall. Ihatov is a fictional place created by poet/author Kenji Miyazawa derived from his native Iwate prefecture. Features The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, a chamber chorus, a junior high school choir, and lead 'vocaloid' by digital female star Hatsune Miku, a synthesizer application who appears as an animated projection. Behind this extraordinary spectacle was Isao Tomita, who composed the symphony and cleverly incorporated the vocaloid into an orchestral work for the first time. Symphony Ihatov has been billed as Tomita's magnum opus, expressing the 'psychedelic' and colourful world of Miyazawa's literature, that Tomita has been a fan of since he was a child. The two worlds of Tomita, the orchestral and electronic combining with spectacular results. The production received much critical acclaim. Includes interview with Tomita and with conductor Shoichi Kawai. Includes 3D section and 3D glasses. Blu-ray Region A.

Kyo (SACD Hybrid)

Price: 25.99

Collaboration album between one of Japan's best young shakuhachi players, Dozan Fujiwara, and veteran electronic music pioneer Isao Tomita. Fujiwara studied under the master Hozan Yamamoto, in the Tozan school of which he is a qualified instructor. Like his teacher, he has developed a sense for experimentation and recorded with a wide range of artists both Japanese and foreign, including Ryuichi Sakamoto. Born in 1932, Tomita has been performing electronic music since the 1960s on Moog synthesizers. This is the first time Tomita has produced an entire album for a single artist. They first composed music for a film together which led to this project. Shakuhachi, koto and hichiriki are combined with Tomita's trademark synthesizer sounds.
