Isao Tomita passed away on May 5th 2016, aged 84. At the time of his death, Tomita was working on a musical, Doctor Coppelius, dedicated to his friend Hideo Itokawa. The performance was scheduled to be on what would have been his 85th birthday on November 11th and 12th at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo. Before his death, Tomita had said that he wished Doctor Coppelius would be finished after his death, so in line with his wishes, as well as his family, the concert went ahead titled 'The Memorial Concert for Isao Tomita- Isao Tomita x Hatsune Miku 'Dr. Coppelius'. Hideo Itokawa was a pioneer of Japan's aerospace industry. Dr. Coppelius is about a young scientist who dreams of flying into space, and a mysterious girl from another world. It is called a 'Space Ballet' in which the characters transcend space and time. Although most of the music had been completed at the time of Tomita's death, it still needed arranging. This was done by Hikaru Kotobuki. Ballet dancer Mugen Kazama performs with the virtual character, Hatsune Miku.
