TEMPYO GAFU Music from the Silk Road (Reference #FSD3331)Among its collection of priceless treasures, the Shosoin Imperial Repository in Nara houses various instruments which were introduced into Japan from China after passing along the Silk Road during the Tempyo period, the Japanese era contemporary with the Tang Period (618-906) in China. Tempyo Gafu is an ensemble consisting of leading performers of traditional music from China, Korea and Japan. The ancient instruments they play include lutes, such as the five string pipa, the four string pipa, the ruanxian moon guitar, zithers such as the kugo and qin, wind instruments including the shakuhachi, the u bamboo mouth organ, and the hichiriki double reed pipe and percussion instruments such as the fangxiang and bianzhong chimes. After ten years of preparatory work, the leader of the group, Liu Hongjun restored many of these ancient instruments, and made costumes worn by musicians from this time to recreate an ancient ensemble from this time. The court music of the Japanese Tempyo era and Chinese Tang period therefore has come back to life after more than one thousand years.
