La Tanguista (Nippon Modern Times Series)

Ref: FSD5949

Price: 23.99

The Nippon Modern Times Series is a collaboration of four of the oldest record companies in Japan; Victor, Columbia, Teichiku and King. The series focuses on archive recordings of Japanese jazz and swing music made between 1928 and 1942, many of them released onto CD for the first time. It's commonly believed that jazz was introduced into Japan by Americans following World War II. There were however, already dance halls in Tokyo where jazz and tango had been played since the 1920s. Utako Matsushima was a female muse of King Records. On this album she sings 24 Japanese flavoured tango tunes, many never previously released on CD.
