First solo album for eight years. Recorded mostly in New York but utilizes field recordings and museum material from around the world. The album plays with 'ideas of a-synchronism, prime numbers, chaos, quantum physics and the blurred lines of life and artificiality/noise and music.' According to Sakamoto he conceived the idea of writing for a Andrei Tarkovsky film that does not exist, and at the same time taking 'inspiration from everyday objects, sculpture and nature.' It apparently includes piano and orchestra, as well as 'unique acoustic and electric sounds, both programmed and organic.' It is also described as one of Sakamoto's most 'personal albums'.

Year Book 1971-1979 (3 CDs)

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO

Year Book 1971-1979 (3 CDs)

Ref: FSD6932

Price: 34.99

3 CDs that covers the 'anonymous' years of Ryuichi Sakamoto in the 1970s, with many unreleased tracks. During this time Sakamoto was often referred to as 'Abu' or 'The Professor'. In 1970 Sakamoto began studying music composition at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, with a later emphasis on electronic and world music. He also studied ethnomusicology, where he developed his interest in Okinawan, Indian and African music. From the beginning he had eclectic tastes. He studied classical piano, became involved in the underground folk scene, and experimented with electronic music on university synthesizers, such as the ARP Odyssey and Moog. This CD covers Sakamoto's transition from an amateur to a professional musician. The 3 CDs include Piano Sonata (1971) a String Quartet (1972) and 'Bunsan, Kyokai, Suna' composed for the contemporary classical pianist Aki Takahashi. As a largely anonymous figure he worked with musicians playing soul, reggae, avant-garde. The CDs also include his first forays into electronic music, played in solo performances at the exhibition 'Nasuka no Kioku' in 1978, the same year as his first solo album, Thousand Knives. As well as rare and unpublished recordings, the music defines an era in the 1970s when different musical forms were being formulated, from avant-garde to pop. Ryuichi Sakamoto includes detailed information and data on the recordings, and never before seen photos.

How's this for an ecclectic release? Originally released on LP in 1975, a children's choir sings songs themed around the Ainu, some in the Ainu language with lyrics by Kohei Oikawa, music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also arranged the songs together with Tatsuro Yamashita of the legendary group Sugar Babe. 12 songs.

Acoustic YMO

Ref: FSD2571

Price: 25.99

The Toy Box are a group of twelve musicians and three extra percussionists playing acoustic instruments including sax, melodeon, bandoneon, mandolin, flute, picolo, guitars, cello and piano. Fans of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, they decided to do a cover of YMO's first album, totally acoustically. A bizarre idea, considering this was a classic of synthesized techno-pop, but a project that proves these were great songs in the first place. Adding his stamp of approval is Haruomi Hosono, who does the vocals on two of the tracks.
