Takeharu Kunimoto is one of Japan's great entertainers. Both his parents were rokyoku storytellers, a tradition Kunimoto continues until today, although its his other set of inspirations and talents that set him apart. A fantastic shamisen player, he is also a big fan of bluegrass music, rock 'n' roll, blues and other types of music that he plays on the shamisen. This 3 CD best of album contains 28 tracks, 21 from 7 albums, - Asia no Inori, Kunimoto, Takeharu, Miracle Chushingura, Ganryu Jima Uta Emaki, Appalachian Shamisen and the US only released Sushi & Gravy - plus 3 new tracks and 4 tracks on CD 3 recorded live.
One of our favourite albums of 2007 was Appalachian Shamisen by shamisen player Takeharu Kunimoto and his group of American bluegrass musicians, The Last Frontier. In July 2007 they performed live in Yokohama and now the DVD of that concert is released. Part 1 features Takeharu performing solo in his usual shamisen and rokyoku storytelling role. Part 2 features Takeharu with the Last Frontier playing banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass. 21 tracks. Price: £28.99
Takeharu is a wonderful shamisen player and rokyoku (storytelling) singer. He developed a highly musical and entertaining style of rock 'n' roll shamisen and in 2003 went to East Tennessee State University for a year to study American traditional culture especially bluegrass. Aged 14 Takeharu had first heard bluegrass and the following year met Bill Monroe in Japan. In Tennessee he started playing his shamisen with a bluegrass band, which led to the formation of the group The Last Frontier. They toured in Japan and the US and recorded this album together. Appalachian Shamisen feels like an entirely natural combination, the result of years of absorbing bluegrass into rokyoku and shamisen. Brilliantly played, with loads of humour. Fantastic stuff.
