We've been fans of cheolhyeongeum (iron zither) player Yu Kyung Hwa, and her album Sympathy for several years. As indeed have many customers and various guitarists from around the world who have got in touch with us about her. Yu, (named here as Kyung-hwa Ryu) is one of the featured artists on this five member band of musicians playing janguu (hourglass drum), daegum (pipe) taepyeongso (double reed wind instrument) - both played by Young-Sup Lee - plus bass, percussion and drums. The first track from Yu's album Sympathy, is the opening on this album too, the brlliant Bird of Oblivion. The version here, is altogether edgier, given a new lease of life with traditional flute, reed, percussion and the ching of a bell. The album only gets better with jazz, rock and even Indian music putting in an appearance. As the English liner notes say ' These artists of different backgrounds and areas create a new sound that exudes its own unique colour. Their profound understanding of tradition establishes the concrete foundation for their music. The ensemble knows how to play with tension and precision.. Their music is exact yet fresh'. Can't argue with that.

The Best Ca Tru Singer of the 20th Century - Dao Nuong Bac Nhat The Ky 20,

QUACH THI HO

The Best Ca Tru Singer of the 20th Century - Dao Nuong Bac Nhat The Ky 20,

Ref: FSD6875

Price: 23.99

Quach Thi Ho (1909-20010) was a designated 'People's Artist' of Vietnam. Even today she is revered as the greatest practicioner of Ca Tru (choral chamber music). Ca Tru originated from folk traditions and festivals, whereby two or three female singers would be accompanied by a male musician. At the beginning of the 20th century, the form of singing had moved from the countryside to the city. It became popular in the streets of Hanoi and Hue. The theatre owners however, hired just a few professional singers and many of the female singers (dao ruou) were left to serve the drinks and work as prostitutes in the bars where Ca Tru was performed. Quach Thi Ho bucked this trend, joining a Ca Tru troupe by the age of seven, and one of the most famous singers by the time she was twenty. She worked at the Van Thai Theatre for 24 years. Following the revolution in 1945, Ho helped to waive the debts of the other dao ruou workers in her theatre. Ca Tru theatres disappeared, its image tainted by its seedy past. Quanh Thi Ho worked hard to clean up the image and cement Ca Tru as a classical art form. She became internationally known in the 1970s, being awarded an honorary diploma by UNESCO's International Music Council. She travelled to North Korea and Russia to perform. This CD was recorded in 1962, and is issued onto CD from an original release on cassette.

Paperback, 255 pages, English and Malay. A4 size.

Parallel to the developments of the Jazz and Blues music in the US towards the end of the 19th century, Malay’s music in that period was experiencing its vast evolvement of diversity through the Bangsawan opera’s golden era. Shifting gradually with the insertion of modern musical instruments within the opera’s orchestra, had simultaneously produced talented and well played musicians in the Malay World. Thus, the origin of Malay’s popular music could often be traced back through its many musicians that developed since the early 20th century.

This book entitled MUSIKA - Malaya’s Early Music Scene will take us to rediscover the groundbreaking artistes that had helped to shape the Malay musical heritage within the last century. Biographical pages of the artist in chronological order includes musicians, composers, bandleaders and singers portraying their early lives and struggles throughout the years.

The MUSIKA - Malaya’s Early Music Scene is the first compilation of the Malaya’s Early Musician reference volume which cater to anyone who fancy Malaya’s music history from the 1900s to 1965.
