Folk doesn't mean Japanese folk songs (minyo) but new songs influenced by US modern folk music in the 1960s, such as Peter, Paul & Mary and Kingston Trio. In the late 1960s, folk singers began to sing more serious protest songs influenced by Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger. The folk boom laid the foundations of 'new music' and to a lesser degree rock in the 1970s.

The Best of Golden Best - Popular Song (Kayoukyoku) (Blu-spec CD2)

Ref: FSD7131

Price: 15.99

Kayoukyoku is a general term for 'popular songs' that originated in the 1930s, but came into common usage after World War II. Although somewhat vague, it generally refers to the middle ground between 'pops' which have strong western characteristics and enka, which has strong Japanese characteristics. From the late 1960s until the 1980s, borrowing from all types of foreign musics, such as soul, disco etc. these styles blended together and the boundaries of kayoukyoku became more difficult to define.

Enka came to be used in the early 1970s to describe a type of kayoukyoku, usually a slow to medium ballad heavily influenced by elements of indigenous Japanese music. The three main elements of the lyrics are harbours, tears and rain. The theme usually centres around dark stories such as seperation of lovers, loss of hope, despair and cherished memories. Price: 15.99

In the 1950s and 60s, good looking young singers of kayoukyoku became popular among young audiences. In the 1970s, kayokyoku singers became younger and younger and the term 'idol', meaning young, good looking singers became widely used. By the late 70s, young teen singers debuted one after another. Magazines became very important to spread information about them. Usually 'idols' don't have to be well trained musically, image is everything, and great studio musicians, composers, producers etc..are brought in. Therefore they are more artificial than conventional 'pop stars'.

The term J-Pop became a popular term at the beginning of the 1990s, eventually replacing what was called kayoukyoku. It encompassed many of the previous genres such as new music, idol, etc..although enka has always remained seperate. It was a term that brought incredible marketing success, with many rock bands, singers, groups riding the crest of the J-Pop wave and selling millions of records. Producers such as Tetsuro Komuro dominated the charts at certain periods, as did acts associated with talent agencies such as Johnny & Associates, and big selling rock bands. As an all encompassing term, it is still by far the most popular genre of music in Japan. This compilation even includes acts that emerged during the world music boom in the 1990s, perhaps not normally associated with J-Pop.
