Tokyo-chutei-iki
are an amazing group of ten baritone saxophone players. Led by the
enigmatic Akira Mizutani, the band also features members who have
played with Cicala Mvta and Shibusashirazu. Their music is unclassifiable;
along the lines of contemporary experimental jazz with occassional
voiceovers, without question original, surprising, challenging and
energising. Tokyo-chutei-iki (which translates as Tokyo mid-low
frequency band limits) were formed in 2000 originally with three
members. Mizutani first got a baritone sax in 1994 and started off
playing with a cello player. He then met and played along with another
baritone player and the seeds for this project were first planted.
In 2000 he went to see Shibusashirazu and told his idea of forming
an exclusive baritone sax band to the group's baritone player and
then there were three. The band soon blossomed thereafter to its
current 10 members. The group have now released 3 albums.
