MARIMBA TROPICANA

Biography

Marimba Tropicana is a twelve piece Japanese group, who uniquely interpret a wide range of latin music for the marimba. The group were formed in 1997 and consist of four marimba players, together with four percussionists plus three members on guitar, Cuban Tres guitar, ukelele , sax, flute and clarinet.Under the leadership of conga player Masashi Ono, many of the players are top session musicians, who have performed with many leading artists from the Japanese pop and classical music worlds.

The marimba is believed to have been introduced to Central America by West African slaves during the sixteenth century in the early years of Spanish colonisation. Today it is the national instrument of Guatemala, as well as being prevalent still in much African music. The marimba gradually spread among the Maya people of the northern part of Central America, it's sweet tone instantly appealing, it's spread enhanced by the region's plentiful supply of rosewood, from which it's keys are made. At one time it became somewhat unfashionable, and was looked down upon by the European and Latino urban dwellers in Guatemala or Mexico as an instrument of the mountain dwelling indiginous peoples, although nowadays it's popularity is widespread with all types of people.

Marimba Tropicana play a wide range of tunes and styles including Cuban Son, rumba from Puerto Rico, Cha Cha Cha, latin standards, as well as originals and a Beatles cover for their debut album. Marimba Tropicana put a new and original feeling into their music as Asians, interpreting a latin sound. They are inspired by the warm sound of the marimba, it's wooden resonance and positive energy.
