Irama Latin (CD-R)

VARIOUS

Irama Latin (CD-R)

Ref: FSD7035

Price: 19.99

Brilliant album of Latin Music in Indonesia from the early 1950s to the early 60s. Latin music and rhythms, such as mambo and cha cha cha were popular throughout East Asia such as in Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. In Indonesia, Latin rhythms were mixed with Indonesian elements to great effect and great popularity. Latin flavours even found their way later into dangdut and other Indonesian popular music. A fascinating album packed with musical discoveries.

Irama Hawaiian, Vintage Hawaiian of Indonesia 1950s

Ref: FSD7014

Latest from the Polka Dot label of vintage southeast Asian recordings. Irama means rhythm in Indonesian and this album is of the fascinating Hawaiian sounds of Indonesia. Hawaiian influences can be heard in Indonesian kroncong music, where ukulele type instruments and Hawaiian steel guitar were usually played. Groups who played almost exclusively Hawaiian music also became popular in 1950s Dutch East Indies. Great CD of lovely tunes from this period. Watch the videos for some musical examples.

Irama Jazz (CD-R)

Ref: FSD6801

Price: 19.99

Fantastic album of Indonesian jazz compiled from old 78s released in the 1950s and 60s by various jazz groups all led by Nick Mamahit; Irama Trio, Irama Special trio and Irama Quartet. Nick Mamahit is known as the pioneer of Indonesian jazz and the pianist / leader of Irama Trio. Born in 1923 in Jakarta he studied music in Holland during the 1940s. He formed Irama Trio with Dick Abel (guitar) and Van Der Capellen (bass) after he came back from Holland. He started to record for Irama Records from the early 1950s and the trio used to describe their music as 'Progressive Jazz'. Mamahit decided to end the trio and then formed Irama Special Trio with Jim Espehana (bass) and B. Risokotta (drums). In the early 1960s they released their first album Sarinande, on which they arranged various Indonesian folk songs into lounge jazz. In 1973 they went to Japan with Broery Marantika, a star singer of the time and performed at the International Music Festival held at the Budokan in Tokyo. Later Mamahit became a pianist for the Mandarin Hotel in Jakarta and died aged 80 in 2004. Comes as CD-R in printed single paper envelope.

Kroncong- Early Indonesian Pop Music Vol. 1

Ref: FSD3236

Price: 23.99

Brilliant 24 track CD that traces the history of Indonesian kroncong music. Kroncong is a mixture of European, Asian and possibly Arabic and African music. It is believed to originate in the communities of freed Portuguese slaves in the 16th century although the modern, classical style dates back to the 1920s or 30s. Vocals are the most important element accompanied by small guitars, a standard guitar, cello, contrabass, flute and violin. This 24 track CD compiles many rare, early recordings from Netty, Krontjong Orchest Eurasia, Miss Riboot, Miss Lee, Kartini, Ratna, and later recordings by Waldjinah and Gesang. Digi pack, rare photos, original labels of the 78s although liner notes are only in Japanese.
