Master of zen style shakuhachi, Doso Watazumi [1910-1992] was a very influential shakuhachi player. He played a natural, unlacquered instrument, as in order to understand nature and oneself, he said, the shakuhachi has to be in it's rawest possible form. Not just a musician, he also practiced a vigorous physical discipline, shunned organized zen practice and created his own 'way of Watazumi'. Shakuhachi is most often associated with traditional classical music, but is also an integral part of minyo or folk music. The foremost player of this minyo style is Satoshi Yoneya, who as well as performing solo, has played with the Takio Ito Band and female minyo singer Akiko Kanazawa. On this album, Yoneya plays minyo and kayokyoku (half way between minyo and pop), accompanied by piano, keyboards, bass and drums which results in a sound more 'new age' than his previous albums.

Collaboration of Yukihiro Goto (biwa) and Akihito Obama (shakuhachi). They have gone back to the roots of the music, performing 'kadozuke' style, literally 'on the corner' - on the street, or in front of a store or house where potential donors are hopefully inside. Collaboration album between one of Japan's best young shakuhachi players, Dozan Fujiwara, and veteran electronic music pioneer Isao Tomita. Fujiwara studied under the master Hozan Yamamoto, in the Tozan school of which he is a qualified instructor. Like his teacher, he has developed a sense for experimentation and recorded with a wide range of artists both Japanese and foreign, including Ryuichi Sakamoto. Born in 1932, Tomita has been performing electronic music since the 1960s on Moog synthesizers. This is the first time Tomita has produced an entire album for a single artist. They first composed music for a film together which led to this project. Shakuhachi, koto and hichiriki are combined with Tomita's trademark synthesizer sounds.

Akihito Obama is one of the best young shakuhachi players in Japan. He has played with the excellent Takio Band and performed in many countries around the world. On this album he plays duets with six other top musicians on a variety of instruments. Akira Horikoshi (percussion), Yukihiro Goto (Satsuma biwa), Hiroshi Yoshino (wood bass), Taro Matsumoto (shakuhachi), Yuriko Mukoujima (viola) and Etsuko Takezawa (17 stringed koto). It all hangs together well, with a lot of variety and some great musicianship.

Kazu Matsui is a shauhachi (bamboo flute) player and producer based in the US. He is known primarily for his contribution to various soundtracks and as a producer for his wife, successful pianist Keiko Matsui. On this album he is joined by his wife and guitar player and programmer Hajime Hyakkoku, on an album that mixes shakuhachi with elements of jazz and rock.

Dozan Fujiwara is a young shakuhachi player who studied under the great Hozan Yamamoto. Emiko Miyazaki is a female koto player, known for her contemporary performance and compositions. This CD contains some of Miyazaki's original tunes, Japanese folk tunes, tango and others styles on a varied CD.

Shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player Kinohachi is a student of the pioneering Kifu Mitsuhashi, active back in the 60s. Kinohachi is attempting to do roughly the same as his master on his first album, that is bring something new and fresh to the instrument. His imagination however doesn't stretch much beyond adding synthesizers, programmed beats and attempting to look cool on the cover. Music seemingly made to have on in the background, which is fine if that's what you want.

Kinohachi's second album is an improvement on his debut. The backing has a slightly harder, more interesting edge to it, and his playing has more expression.
