Hinemosu

MICABOX feat.AYAKO TAKATO

Hinemosu

Ref: FSD2417

Price: 19.99

Released October 2006 on the Far Side label. On the album Hinemosu, Micabox combine ancient with modern Japan. Kagura (music for the gods) minyo (local folk) and other Oriental sounds are mixed with the cutting edge electronics of Toshimi Mikami, together with help from his mentor, the legendary Haruomi Hosono (ex-YMO) and superb female vocalist Ayako Takato. Hosono who mixed and adds additional sounds to this CD has been a pioneering musician in Japan for several decades, at the forefront of creating Japanese rock music with the group Happy End, technopop with his group Yellow Magic Orchestra (along with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi) world music and electronic dance music. Kagura "god music" is music and dance played at shrines, and is probably Japan's most ancient surviving music. It has its roots in acts of magic in worship of the gods inhabiting the forest and sea. Minyo are local Japanese folk songs of which literally thousands exist, from the far north of Hokkaido to the deep south of Okinawa. It wasn't until Mikami met female singer Ayako Takato in the Pan-Pacific Mongoloid Unit, a group run by Haruomi Hosono of which Mikami is also a member that Mikami had found a singer with the versatility to sing the tunes he had composed over a number of years. The album is a bit like a snapshot of today's Japan; where the grounds of an ancient, peaceful temple stands adjacent to the blazing neon of an advertising hoard. A curious mixture of the old and new, spiritual and hi-tech, serenity and chaos.

KEN MATSUDAIRA

Matsuken Samba 2 Remix Tracks

Ref: FSD2621

Price: 24.99

For 25 years Ken Matsudaira starred as an 18th century samurai in the TV programme 'The Violent Shogun'. It therefore came as a bit of a shock when he appeared in a glittering gold and purple kimono, singing a delightfully kitsch samba tune called Matsuken Samba, complete with shouts of 'Ole!', 'Viva!' 'Amigo!' 'Senorita'! dancing the samba, and still with that samurai hair cut. Matsuken Samba has become a massive hit in Japan, with Ken Matsudaira one of the stars at the 2004/05 Kohaku New Year's Eve TV show. This CD/DVD features 6 mixes of Matsuken Samba, plus 6 instrumentals of those mixes. From jazzy breakbeats, trippy jazz, a fabulous Jazztronik mix, the Shogun mix, reggae mix, to the high energy carnival mix by Yukihiro Fukutomi, it's all delightfully over the top tongue in cheek fun. DVD has a promo video, Matsuken live in Tokyo and a tutorial so you can dance the Matsuken samba yourself.

' Electro dub adventuring from Japan's Okinawan archipelago. Gordon & Taylor keep the mystery while adding their own voice to the music, blending traditional children's songs with dub reggae on 'Tinsagu Nu Hang' or mixing the punchy sound of the sanshin banjo with nifty drum programming. A triumph.' - Muzik

RYUKYU UNDERGROUND

Mo Ashibi

Ref: FSD2036

Price: 26.99

Following the success of their first album, Ryukyu Underground release their much anticipated follow up. In contrast to their first album, which sampled many traditional recordings on local labels, this time around Jon and Keith were keen to cooperate and interact with Okinawan musicians in laying down the basic tracks. Despite his young age, Toru Yoneha is one of Okinawa's top players, much in demand as a session musician of the sanshin, the three stringed snake skinned banjo at the heart of Okinawan traditional music. In female singer Mika Uchizato, they have unearthed a real new talent. It's Mika's beautiful voice that is heard on the opening track 'Hana' originally recorded by legend Shokichi Kina, and one of Okinawa's best known songs around the world. 'Koi no Michi Kusa', features Mika over a heavy dub backing, a sound that has become one of the trademarks of Ryukyu Underground. Elsewhere Kuiji nu Hana is set to an infectious bossa nova/samba rhythm, Sefa Utaki has a laid back ambient drum 'n' bass feel, while Kanasando is in a downtempo lounge style.
